The Forensic Medicine Unit of the University of Crete is engaged in the development of new innovative methods in the fields of Forensic Medicine, Forensic Anthropology and Imaging for the easy, rapid and reliable positive identification and determination of cause and manner of death.

The death of a person deeply affects the family, the society and often the Justice system. It is extremely important that answers regarding the circumstances of death can be provided quickly and reliably with modern methods that highlight the importance of forensic evidence. In addition, the preservation of identity is a universally recognized and indeniable Human Right and the reliable identification of an unknown person such as, for example, the victims of the migration crisis of the last decade is an obligation of the society.

Every human body has a story to tell about the circumstances of its life and death which I find fascinating. If the story is like a complex puzzle, my research helps to fit the pieces together and to reveal the complete picture.

Each research question leads to a partial answer and at the same time to the genesis of the next one. Thus, scientific knowledge knows no end and scientific curiosity is maintained untouchable as part of an eternal process.
