At the heart of STEPS lies the Growth Mindset: the belief that our knowledge and abilities are not static but can evolve through learning, effort, the use of effective strategies, feedback, and reflection.
Science itself is a living example of this philosophy. Scientific knowledge advances through questioning, exploration, experimentation, trial and error, revision, and the continuous search for new solutions. At STEPS, we aim to make this process visible and accessible to all; science is presented not as a set of ready-made answers, but as a dynamic process of discovery, learning, and evolution.
This philosophy is put into practice through the free training program offered by the Center for Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning (KEDIVIM) of the University of Crete, titled “Growth Mindset in Research and Education: From Theory to Practice.” Designed for researchers and educators, the program bridges theory and practical tools, combining the Growth Mindset with Inquiry-Based Learning, the STEAM approach, inclusion, and equitable participation. Through this training, participants develop skills for designing Learning Labs, educational activities, and initiatives focused on science communication and public engagement. Teachers are empowered to create learning environments that foster curiosity, collaboration, perseverance, and the participation of all students. Similarly, researchers are supported in transforming scientific knowledge into accessible, interactive, and meaningful experiences for the public.
