1 What is your research about?

The Forensic Medicine Unit of the University of Crete is engaged in the development of new innovative methods in the fields of Forensic Medicine, Forensic Anthropology and Imaging for the easy, rapid and reliable positive identification and determination of cause and manner of death.

2 Why is it important?

The death of a person deeply affects the family, the society and often the Justice system. It is extremely important that answers regarding the circumstances of death can be provided quickly and reliably with modern methods that highlight the importance of forensic evidence. In addition, the preservation of identity is a universally recognized and indeniable Human Right and the reliable identification of an unknown person such as, for example, the victims of the migration crisis of the last decade is an obligation of the society.

3 What inspired you to pursue this path?

Every human body has a story to tell about the circumstances of its life and death which I find fascinating. If the story is like a complex puzzle, my research helps to fit the pieces together and to reveal the complete picture.

4 What do you like most about research?
5 What advice would you give to a child who loves science?

There is no such thing as failure, only people who never tried.

6 Fun fact: Tell us something about yourself that not many people know.

It took me five years to convince myself to start using computers.
