Active public engagement is at the heart of the STEPS European Researchers’ Night. The event brings science beyond laboratories and into an open, creative, and participatory space where research meets society.
People of all ages have the opportunity to meet researchers, ask questions, exchange ideas, and discover how scientific knowledge is created and evolves.
Through interactive workshops, experiments, demonstrations, presentations, and hands-on activities, visitors do not simply observe science — they actively engage with it. They experiment, make predictions, test ideas, explore solutions, and interact directly with the people behind the research.
Particular emphasis is placed on children, pupils, young people, and families, creating positive first encounters with research that foster curiosity and interest in science. STEPS also promotes inclusive participation, welcoming people of different ages, backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
Growth Mindset is central to this experience. Participants do not need to have all the answers to engage with science. Asking questions, trying, making mistakes, receiving feedback, and discovering new possibilities are all part of the research process.
Through this direct interaction between researchers and the public, STEPS aims to strengthen public engagement with science, promote scientific literacy, and highlight the role of research and innovation in addressing contemporary social, environmental, technological, and educational challenges.
